4/10/07
- Time to Tee Up by Kyle
Gratton (Article from the BFA Mercury, April 10, 2007 Edition)
As
the snow begins to melt and the grass turns green, the Academy golf
team is set to turn over a new leaf. With the departure of
head coach Bob Caggige, the team finds itself with the third coach
in the program's 38-year history. Chris Hungerford of the BFA
Science Department will succeed Caggige, who followed the father of
BFA golf, Bob Ashton. Hungerford is a year 2000 graduate of
BFA, and was a member of the team all four years. Hungerford
also holds the course record at Champlain Country Club, with a
5-under 65. Hungerford looks to bring a new energy to a golf
team that has come up short of their own expectations in past years.
The
teams has been split this season for the second time, creating both
Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. The Varsity team is lead by
seniors Patrick Coleman, Adam Bouchard, and Pete Manahan, who, along
with Juniors Ben Cioffi, and Matt King are hoping to build on last
season when the squad missed qualifying for the States by just five
strokes. "My expectations are for each player to work hard,
have fun, and be committed to the program. I am very confident
this team can be very successful." Coach Hungerford says.
The
JV team has nine players on their team, all of whom are either
freshman or sophomores. "These players are certainly the
future of BFA golf, and their potential is evident. There may
also be a few JV matches this year so they can get valuable
experience," Hungerford said of his JV squad.
In
addition to two boys teams, the girls team is about to enter its
sophomore season, and has added another player to the roster.
With three girls this year, the team looks to improve on the results
of their first season. Seniors Sadie Bushey and Chellsey
Boissoneault return from last years team, and freshman Amanda
Merchant is the addition to Comet golf. "The girl's team
should be very competitive with Chellsey and Sadie, and the addition
of Amanda should give the team depth," Hungerford said.
Academy golf tees off in twenty days when the Varsity team takes on
Essex, CVU, and host team Middlebury. The girls begin the
season two days later at the Girls Tournament in Barre.
4/7/07
- An overview of Junior Golf
in the St. Albans, VT area has been created in the
Program section. In addition, junior
tournaments are now organized in the Juniors section. BFA Golf
Alumni can now be found in the tradition
section. Please send updated contact information, primarily

4/5/07
-
Snow has blanketed St.
Albans, so the team is back indoors, but still preparing diligently
for the upcoming season. Special thanks to Bob Ashton & Bob
Caggige for helping to complete the tradition section about BFA golf
history. Their contributions to BFA golf can also be found in
the Coaches section of BFA golf tradition.
Stay tuned as the season is only a few weeks away, assuming the snow
goes away of course.
3/28/07
- The Tradition section is
now completed, with the exception of individual scoring details from
some seasons. If you have any scrapbooks or clippings that can
add detail to the Bobwhite, Comet or Junior History sections, please contact me
so I can add them to the site. In addition, there will soon be
a section for Juniors, which will be a source for 18 & under golfers
during the summer golf tournament season.
3/22/07
- The BFA golf teams are in
motion, check out the Bobwhite and Comet links above to see our
rosters and schedule of events for the spring season. In
addition, BFA golf history has been updated extensively, click on
the Tradition link. There is also a BFA records page to check
out the highest individual and team finishes in BFA history.
3/15/07
- The first practice

individually, but this will give you some info if I can't reach you.
3/7/07
- Sign-Ups for
the 2007 golf season will be on 3/12/07, with our season
beginning on 3/19/07. Stay tuned for updated information about

comprehensive history of BFA golf from its beginning in 1969, with
the much appreciated help of former coaches Bob Ashton & Bob
Caggige.
3/1/07
- The launching
of the BFA golf website, your comprehensive source for BFA golf, and
junior golf in the St. Albans area. If you are a junior

about junior golf in the area for the whole season, so stay tuned.
September 9, 2007
- Golf Season Winding Down
- The golf season is beginning to wind down, but what a year it has
been. BFA has a solid season, going 14-8-1 to finish fifth in
the metro standings. In the summer, Champlain Country Club had
some notable junior golf news. The junior league was won by
Mike and Joe Hartmann, in the two age divisions. Mike Hartmann
won the Vermont Junior Stroke play championships in Middlebury, and
was runner-up at the Jr. Match play championship. The CCC Club
Championship was won by Bryan Smith, who fired a 72-76=148 for a one
shot victory.
July 5, 2007 -
Champlain CC Heads to Amateur
- Summer is in full swing, and off-season events are plenty.
At Champlain Country Club, junior league is in its second week, with
about fifteen players competing each week. In June, Champlain
emerged victorious in an interclub match vs. Burlington CC, with
Mike Hartmann earning medalist honors with a 75. Professional
Mike Swim is running junior clinics daily with a huge turnout of
eager young golfers. Coming in July: junior league continues,
Burlington comes to Champlain for a match, junior clinics, and Jr
VGA events leading up to the state championship on Aug. 1 in
Middlebury. The VT Amateur is next week (July 10-12) at
Brattleboro, and Champlain CC has its first full team of players
qualified for the event: Chris Hungerford, Bryan Smith, Mike
Hartmann, Cam Wood, & Adam Bouchard. This group will be
competing for the McCullough cup, which is a team trophy at the
Amateur. Stay tuned for more throughout the summer, and
contact me if you have any questions or comments. |
